Guide: mental strength, pressure and coachability
Scouts and coaches regularly say that attitude is the tiebreaker between two players of similar talent. Mental strength is not a trait you either have or not — it can be trained.
What is watched
- Coachability: do you listen and apply feedback immediately?
- Reaction to mistakes: do you hide, or do you want the ball again?
- Consistency: the same level on a bad day as on a good one
- Pressure: decisions in the decisive moments of a match or a trial
- Professionalism: sleep, nutrition, punctuality, behaviour off the pitch
How to train it
- Routines before matches and before important actions
- Breathing and focus techniques — yoga is one of them
- Clear, small goals for every session instead of one big dream
- Reflection after training: what worked, what next
- Exposure: getting used to pressure by training under it, for example in 1v1 and kickboxing
