Guide: how do footballers get scouted?

Scouts look for players who perform regularly at a level that tells them something. There is no shortcut — but there are things a player can influence.

What scouts look at

  • Regular minutes at the highest level a player can get — a regular starter one level lower is often more visible than a substitute who rarely plays
  • Standout qualities: one or two things a player does better than others in the same position
  • Consistency: performance over many matches, not one good game
  • Personality: attitude, coachability, how a player reacts to mistakes and pressure
  • Physical profile and development relative to age

How to be seen

  • Play: minutes in competitive matches are the most important currency
  • Have good footage: a short highlight video plus full matches — see football CV and video
  • Go where scouts are: matches in visible leagues, tournaments, and showcases or camps where scouts are actually present
  • Use your network: coaches who know you can recommend you to clubs
  • Know the market: where young players actually get minutes — see the football market in Austria and Germany

At the SKN Excellence Campus

Scouts from professional clubs watch all four days, not only the final trial match against the SKN St. Pölten first team, and every session is filmed. That does not replace regular minutes at a player’s club — it adds a concentrated chance to be seen and an honest assessment.
